Natural Treatment for IBS and General Information

By Troy Stevens

IBS stands for irritable bowel syndrome, an uncomfortable, often painful and nearly always embarrassing condition which affects millions of people around the globe. It's not a serious disease in that it's life threatening, but the discomfort and pain it can cause can be very severe.

The degree of the symptoms vary from person to person, ranging from very mild to nearly debilitating. The treatments which can effectively alleviate or cure the condition also vary from one individual to the next. This is because IBS is a term which refers to the symptoms rather than the cause, which may be any of several different factors.

When the digestive muscles flow of movement is interrupted by these spasms, and cramps the affect can be likened to that of a malfunctioning conveyor belt. Certain areas are vacated extremely fast and others are backed up. This can lead to all sorts of problems on the line. In peoples case it can lead to severe gas, bloating, pain, explosive diarrhea, and other nasty things.

I suffer from this problem myself so I understand what people who have this problem are going through. The main difference between this problem and others is that IBS isn't a disease in the usual terms. In most cases a disease involves an infection or a foreign bacteria or virus inside the body causing problems. This is more of a malfunction, not that it doesn't deserve to be classified as a disease, it's just not a normal problem.

One of the key problems with treating it is that people don't seem to understand that they need to take care of themselves first. One of the main causes of IBS is a lack of fiber in the body. Fiber and whole grains can help keep the digestive system moving as well as all the vitamins and minerals your mother always told you to take. I'm not saying fiber is the cure all but having adequate fiber can't hurt, and in some cases eases the problem.

Easing the problem can help immensely; sometimes you can deal with the condition if it's less intense. Another thing you can do on your own is exercise. Walk, power walk, or run. Basically anything that gets you moving. These types of activities encourage bowel movements and as such encourage your intestinal muscles to move properly.

Physical activity encourages proper digestive function and in combination with a proper diet, it can treat or even cure irritable bowel syndrome naturally. Even the healthiest diet and best exercise regimen are no guarantee of a cure tough. While these natural treatments for irritable bowel syndrome can help, some people may need further treatment.

There are a few natural treatment options available to people suffering from IBS. If diet and exercise don't eliminate your symptoms, consult your physician and ask what they recommend as the next step to take. Natural treatments should always be tried first, but if you have a serious condition, your doctor is there for a reason - your health is important, so seek their advice when needed.
