Carpal Tunnel Suffering Can Be Erased

By Tom Nicholson

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects adults. If by any chance you suspect that you have its symptoms, it would be wise to immediately consult your doctor. He will submit you to a number of tests to diagnose your condition. This way, your doctor will give you a firm confirmation on whether or not you are already suffering carpal tunnel syndrome or another similar condition.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of nerves, blood vessels and ligaments that are located at the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is the bone that is located at the wrist, the area right at the base of the hand. Due to swelling and pressure, the blood vessels, ligaments and median nerves that pass through the carpal tunnel become constricted, which in turn affect their normal functions. This results to feeling sensations right at the thumb and at the first two fingers of one hand or both hands.

Since the condition affects the median nerve, mildly annoying tingling sensations are typically felt in the thumb or in the first few fingers of the hands. Similar sensations may also be felt right at the palm of the hands. In some cases, the condition may deliver pain extending from the arms up to the elbows.

Carpal tunnel syndrome also brings pain on the wrist of one of both hands. The pain along with the constricted nerves will then cause difficulties with finger coordination, making it difficult to pick up things. The condition makes it difficult to perform intricate finger movement.

Long suffered symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may lead to weakened hand grip. In this light, a patient may lose control of his grip, causing him to accidentally drop whatever item he holds. Eventually, without any form of treatment, the condition can immobilize the muscles at the base of the thumb.

Going under your doctor's examination regarding your carpal condition will help you determine if the condition has already compromised the strength of the patient's grip. He will also evaluate the extent of numbness experienced by the patient through a range of motion tests.

As you go to your doctor, two tests are typically performed to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. In the first test, the doctor will position the elbows of the patient at his shoulder level and flex the back of the hands and the wrist to form a 90-degree angle. If the patient already suffers carpal tunnel syndrome, this position should reproduce its symptoms.

The second test is called the Tinel's sign. In this test, the doctor will hold the wrist of the hand pointing the hand downwards. Then, he will gently tap the area in between the wrist and the base of the hand. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome should feel tingling or numbing sensations during the test.

Although you have experienced the common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, only your doctor can confirm if you actually have it or you are just suffering another similar condition. His firm confirmation should guide you in laying out a treatment plan that will help you manage its symptoms and gradually heal. Aside from giving you a carefully planned treatment routine, the doctor may also teach you some special exercises, which can help you cope with the pain and discomforts caused by the condition. As you doctor provides you will all the treatment tools available for carpal tunnel syndrome, you best chance of healing depends on how strictly your follow his instructions.

Exploring The Basics Of Lung Cancer

By Willam Mason

Approximately two thirds of patients with lung cancer occur in people who have either quit smoking or never smoked, this dispelling the myth that only people who smoke get cancer.

When people have cancer in the lungs, it is either primary or metastatic. Primary cancer began in the lungs and is made up of lung cells. Metastatic cancer is cancer in the lungs but did not start in the lungs. Rather, cancer started somewhere else in the body and traveled to the lungs. Metastatic cancer is made of cells from the primary cancer site. Because these two types of cancers are made of different kinds of cells, primary and metastatic cancers in the lungs are treated differently.

When patient are diagnosed with lung cancer, there are a number of treatment options including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Most of the time, patients receive a combination of all three treatments with chemotherapy and radiation administered before or after surgery. This decision is made based on the location and stage of the cancer and is made by the oncologist and surgeon in consultation with the patient.

For patients whose lung cancer is diagnosed early, surgery before other treatments can be beneficial is the tumor appears confined to an area of the body that is removable). When cancer is diagnosed later, surgery alone becomes less effective and patients usually need several kinds of treatment. While surgery may still be an important part of the treatment plan, however chemotherapy and or radiation therapy may need to come first. For patients whose cancer has progressed to its final stages, palliative surgery can make the patient more comfortable, such as if a tumor is obstructing an airway.

For patients undergoing surgery, there are two options: traditional, open surgery or minimally invasive. In traditional surgery, a surgeon makes an incision on the patient's side to gain access to the tumor. The incision can be 5 to 7 inches long and requires spreading the patient's ribs to gain access to the tumor.

Minimally invasive surgery is performed through two incisions which are about two to four centimeters long. Without the need for rib spreading, the surgeon inserts a camera into one incision and projects the inside of the body onto a 26 inch flat screen high definition monitor. Then, the surgeon inserts instruments through the second incision and watches the screen to perform the surgery. This surgery is sometimes called video assisted thoracic surgery, or VATS.

Patients who undergo minimally invasive surgery experience fewer complications and a shorter hospital stay than those who have traditional open surgery. In addition, patients are in the hospital for less time (generally 24-48 hours) and they recover faster with less pain because their ribs were not spread. When patients recovery more quickly, they are able to either return to their normal lives in less time or begin post operative chemotherapy more quickly.

Using Sunblock to Prevent Skin Problems

By Amy Nutt

Some people are under the mistaken assumption that the only time to use sunscreen is on especially hot and sunny days. The truth is that anytime that were out in the sun, the suns rays are having a negative impact on our skin. There is a constant barrage of ultraviolet light that can cause our skin to age before its time, and it can lead to more serious skin problems in the long term. Even on days when its not all that hot outside, it is a good idea to use sunscreen.

With that said, sunscreen is still most needed when a person is spending a day out in the sun, especially if theyre trying to tan. This is when there is the biggest risk of sunburn, which is a direct result of intense sun exposure. Its important to understand how to choose the right sunscreen for the job. SPF, or sun protection factor, is the rating system that is used to determine the strength of a sunscreen. Usually, a minimum sun protection factor of 15 is recommended for tanning or prolonged sun exposure. However, much more powerful levels of protection are available -- up to a 60 SPF rating or more.

There is another factor to consider, as well. There are multiple types of ultraviolet light rays that are harmful to the skin -- UVA and UVB. Many sunscreens are designed to effectively block only one UVB rays, while UVA are actually the more dangerous type. It is a good idea to look for a sunscreen that is designed to block both types of rays. Sunscreens that contain the ingredients zinc oxide, ecamsule, or avobenzone are the best choices for full-spectrum protection.

When it comes to just routine daily sun exposure, a full application of sunscreen isnt really necessary. If youre just eating lunch outdoors or walking for a little while outside, then you should be okay just using other skin-care products that contain minor sunscreens. For example, there are many facial moisturizers that include enough sunscreen to protect your skin from the suns rays on a day-to-day basis.

One of the negative effects associated with sun exposure to the skin is wrinkling. The sun is one of the primary factors when it comes to skin starting to look aged before its time. For people who are concerned about aging and wrinkled skin, there are special sunscreen treatments that are design both to reduce and prevent wrinkles. Many of these have high SPF ratings for maximum protection from the suns light.

Aside from wrinkles, the other major impact of the sun on human skin is skin cancer. Heavy exposure to the sun without the proper protection can lead to a person developing deadly skin cancers. This is one reason why its especially important to get sunscreen that protects against UVA rays. Despite the fact that UVA doesnt cause any burning sensation or redness, it is actually the primary cause of skin cancer. So when youre looking to buy sunscreen, make sure that you make an educated choice that will truly protect you from skin problems.
