Carpal Tunnel Suffering Can Be Erased

By Tom Nicholson

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects adults. If by any chance you suspect that you have its symptoms, it would be wise to immediately consult your doctor. He will submit you to a number of tests to diagnose your condition. This way, your doctor will give you a firm confirmation on whether or not you are already suffering carpal tunnel syndrome or another similar condition.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of nerves, blood vessels and ligaments that are located at the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is the bone that is located at the wrist, the area right at the base of the hand. Due to swelling and pressure, the blood vessels, ligaments and median nerves that pass through the carpal tunnel become constricted, which in turn affect their normal functions. This results to feeling sensations right at the thumb and at the first two fingers of one hand or both hands.

Since the condition affects the median nerve, mildly annoying tingling sensations are typically felt in the thumb or in the first few fingers of the hands. Similar sensations may also be felt right at the palm of the hands. In some cases, the condition may deliver pain extending from the arms up to the elbows.

Carpal tunnel syndrome also brings pain on the wrist of one of both hands. The pain along with the constricted nerves will then cause difficulties with finger coordination, making it difficult to pick up things. The condition makes it difficult to perform intricate finger movement.

Long suffered symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may lead to weakened hand grip. In this light, a patient may lose control of his grip, causing him to accidentally drop whatever item he holds. Eventually, without any form of treatment, the condition can immobilize the muscles at the base of the thumb.

Going under your doctor's examination regarding your carpal condition will help you determine if the condition has already compromised the strength of the patient's grip. He will also evaluate the extent of numbness experienced by the patient through a range of motion tests.

As you go to your doctor, two tests are typically performed to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. In the first test, the doctor will position the elbows of the patient at his shoulder level and flex the back of the hands and the wrist to form a 90-degree angle. If the patient already suffers carpal tunnel syndrome, this position should reproduce its symptoms.

The second test is called the Tinel's sign. In this test, the doctor will hold the wrist of the hand pointing the hand downwards. Then, he will gently tap the area in between the wrist and the base of the hand. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome should feel tingling or numbing sensations during the test.

Although you have experienced the common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, only your doctor can confirm if you actually have it or you are just suffering another similar condition. His firm confirmation should guide you in laying out a treatment plan that will help you manage its symptoms and gradually heal. Aside from giving you a carefully planned treatment routine, the doctor may also teach you some special exercises, which can help you cope with the pain and discomforts caused by the condition. As you doctor provides you will all the treatment tools available for carpal tunnel syndrome, you best chance of healing depends on how strictly your follow his instructions.
