Flu Season - The Worst Time Of The Year!

By Richard H. Ealom

INTRODUCTION: Flu (influenza) season are the months of the year when a lot of people get it and it's easy to catch. Outbreaks usually begin suddenly and occur primarily in the late fall and winter. It is a respiratory infection caused by a number of different viruses. Vaccines are routinely given in the fall, before flu season starts and are available as a vaccination or nasal mist.

Vaccinations are most necessary for: people 65 or older, nursing home patients, children over 6 months of age, people with health problems such as asthma or with long-term diseases, such as HIV or heart disease, children or teen-agers who must often take aspirin, people who are often around older people or those with health problems. Symptoms can be mild or severe - and if they are mild can become severe without notice.

SYMPTOMS: If you get infected with the virus, you will usually feel symptoms 1 to 4 days later. Signs of the flu may include: fever, chills, headache, muscle ache, dizziness, lack of appetite, tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny nose, nausea or vomiting, weakness, ear pain, diarrhea. They come on with out warning and are worse than those of the common cold however; having these symptoms does not guaranteed that you have the flu. Many different illnesses, including the common cold, can have similar symptoms. It is very hard to distinguish the flu from other infections on the basis of these signs alone.

If you develop flu-like symptoms and are concerned about your illness, especially if you are at high risk for complications, you should consult your health-care provider. Based on your signs, your doctor can usually tell if you have influenza, especially during times when a lot of it is going around. After 5 days, fever and other signs have usually disappeared, but a cough and weakness may continue for a while. All symptoms are usually gone within a week or two.

VACCINES: 2 kinds of flu vaccines are available in the US: The "flu shot" - an in-activated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is injected with a needle, usually in the arm OR the nasal-spray - a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause influenza (sometimes called LAIV for "live attenuated influenza vaccine" or FluMist). On October 24, 2007 CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended broadening the use of the nasal influenza vaccine LAIV (FluMist) to include healthy children 2-4 years of age without a history of asthma or reoccuring wheezing.

Anyone who's at risk for getting really sick needs to get a flu shot, or vaccine. It's good for kids who are around older persons and younger kids (like little brothers and sisters) to get the shot also. If you get the vaccine, or shot, it will protect you from getting a bad case of the flu. Whichever one you get, you need to get a new vaccine every year because the flu virus changes each year and the vaccine is created to fight the viruses that are going to be a problem this year.

The flu vaccine is usually given between September and mid-November, although it may be given at other times of the year. Because it prevents infection from only a few of the viruses floating around that can cause flu-like signs, it is not a guaranteed protection against getting sick. Call your MD or local public health department concerning availability in your area.

TREATMENTS: Many people treat their flu by simply Resting in bed, Consuming plenty of fluids, Taking over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol). You can develop complications if you get a bacterial infection, which can lead to pneumonia in your weakened lungs. Treatment is usually not necessary for children, but if the infection is diagnosed early and the patient is at risk of developing a severe case, it can and should be started. Treatment can only help however; If started early and only if the illness is actually influenza. Treatment includes bed rest and plenty of liquids; anti-viral drugs can also be prescribed.

CONCLUSION: The Flu usually starts suddenly and may include the following symptoms: Fever (usually high), Headache, Tiredness (can be extreme), Cough, Sore throat, Runny or stuffy nose, Body aches, Diarrhea and vomiting (more common in children than adults). A doctor's exam may be needed to tell whether you have developed the flu or a complication. There are tests that can determine if you have the flu as long as you are tested within the first 2 or 3 days of illness.

In some people, the illness can cause serious complications, including bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes. The flu can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death.

Although most healthy people recover from influenza without complications, some persons, such as older people, young children, and people with a number health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), are at high risk for serious complications. The virus usually spreads from person to person in respiratory droplets when persons who are infected cough or sneeze. People occasionally may become infected by contacting something with the virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes. The single best way to protect yourself and others against influenza is to get a vaccination every year.

The influenza shot is approved for use in persons older than 6 months, including healthy people and persons with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease). October or November is the best time to get a vaccination, but getting vaccinated in December or even later can still be beneficial since most influenza activity happens in January or later in most years.

Natural Treatment For PCOS - Two Magic Herbs That Work Wonders.

By Crystal Adeyemi

Is there a cure for PCOS? The answer is Yes- Combine three simple things and you will notice a big difference. Good Nutrition, natural herbs and regular exercise all combine to reduce the symptoms of PCOS and Ovarian Cysts.

Herbs in particular are extremely useful in the treatment of PCOS, because they are much gentler on the body, have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs and can be used for sustained periods of time.

The two most commonly used herbs that have been shown to be effective are:

1. Agnus Castus (Vitex/Chastetree Berry): This herb has a direct effect on the pituitary gland. This gland is involved in regulating hormone production and the menstrual cycle.

It is an adaptogen, which means that whether you suffer from a low level of one hormone or an excess of another, you can take Vitex and this herb will regulate the pituitary gland to achieve optimum levels of the hormone.

It is particularly helpful for those with low levels of progesterone as it restores it to normal levels. Low progesterone levels can cause miscarriage, so vitex can help prevent this from happening.

Vitex has a few side effects that you need to be aware of, the most noticeable being digestive upsets and a mild rash

Vitex should be taken for a period of several months in order to help with the cure for PCOS and ovarian cysts.

The typical recommended dose of Vitex is organic tincture is 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day for 3 or 4 months. This herb can be taken daily for up to 18 continuous months, unless pregnancy occurs.

Please consult your doctor before you start using vitex.

2. Garcinia Cambogia (Also known as Brindall Berries)

This small tropical fruit is also known as Malabar tamarind. It comes from central Asia and contains HCA (hydroxyl-citric-acid). This Acid enables carbohydrate to be turned into useable energy instead of being deposited as fat.

This herb can also be used as part of the treatment for PCOS because it helps to suppress appetite, reduce sugar cravings and insulin resistance, and inhibit the formation of fat and cholesterol.

If you are wondering where to get this herb from, it is available from Amazon.com in capsule form.

The most important thing to bear in mind is that our bodies react to different things in different ways and these two herbs used in the treatment for pcos, may not necessarily work for you the way they have worked for others.

Hemorrhoids Treatment - How To Stop The Burning, Itching and Irritation Of Hemorrhoids Fast.

By Crystal Adeyemi

There are many hemorrhoids treatment. You can choose to treat your hemorrhoids using conventional methods or use natural and alternative therapies.

I am a firm believer in finding natural solutions to all ailments, but before we talk about how to treat your hemorrhoids let us answer the question - what are external hemorrhoids?

External hemorrhoids are inflamed and swollen blood veins around the anus. They can be clearly seen by the ordinary eye and tend to vary in sizes depending on how severe they are.

External Hemorrhoids - What causes them?

It is not known for sure but eating too much processed foods and straining during bowel movements does not help matters. Also too much sugar, chocolate, coffee, milk products, pastries and biscuits tend to worsen the situation.

External hemorrhoids are different from internal hemorrhoids, which tend to remain in the rectum and invisible to the ordinary eye. It is possible to suffer from either internal or external hemorrhoids or even both.

External Hemorrhoids - Which treatments have failed so far?

I once suffered from external hemorrhoids myself, and I used the commonly prescribed suppositories and creams, but they did not work for me. If they did it at all, it was always for a very short period of time.

At one point, I even considered having them surgically removed but my doctor told me that was no guarantee that the hemorrhoids would not return. So why go through the pain of having them surgically removed only for the external hemorrhoids to return in 6 months or a couple of years down the line?

Hemorrhoids Treatment - Simple Things you can do to ease the pain.

1. Take 1 capsule of Milk Thistle twice a day to cleanse the liver and help soften your stool.

2. Add herb bilberry to your dietary regimen. It is high in bioflavonoids, which are anti-inflammatory compounds that help relieve external hemorrhoids. If your case is acute, then take 1 capsule of the bilberry every hour until healed.

3. Rub pilewort ointment to the area regularly, twice a day at the start.

4. Never strain during bowel movements as this would only make your condition worse.

5. Don't sit down for too long, an hour at most. Sitting down for too long creates additional pressure on the bottom area. That combined with a sharp pain such as constipation of pregnancy can make things worse. Trust me I know, because I have been there.

6. If you are in serious pain then try sitting in a basin of cold water. This may come as a shock but doing this would help lessen the inflammation and reduce the engorged blood vessels.

7. During bowel movements aim to be on the toilet seat for no longer than 3 to 5mins at any one time.

We have looked at 7 things you can do to alleviate the symptoms of burning and itching commonly associated with hemorrhoids.

If you want to know the best external hemorrhoids treatment that is guaranteed to cure your hemorrhoids fast, then you need to have access to more information.
