The Cholesterol Lie - Causes Of Heart Disease

By Chris Jensen

Each year, more and more Americans are diagnosed with some form of heart disease and a lot of these cases breathe their last breath without realizing it. Most patients with cardiovascular complications are found to have clogged or hardened blood vessels or what cardiologists refer to as atherosclerosis. Many people believe that extremely high levels of cholesterol are at the root of this dreadful disease and they attribute this to the excessive consumption of fatty foods. However, there is more truth to be discovered than to accept this popular belief. Knowing more about the real causes of heart diseases can help a lot in lowering your chances of falling prey to this medical condition.

For years, heart attacks have been associated with high levels of cholesterol in the body. However, it is not merely cholesterol that causes the problem. What really causes it is the oxidation of cholesterol that is brought about by the presence of free radicals. Free radicals are those highly reactive elements that can cause a lot of damage to the cells and tissues in your body. These free radicals can attack your blood vessels that can result to atherosclerosis, a well known precursor to heart ailments and cardiovascular problems.

When free radicals and oxidative stress damage the walls of your blood vessels and cholesterol in your blood, atherosclerosis begins. Damaged cholesterol molecules are more likely to stick to the walls of your blood vessels and to each other, and can eventually clog a blood vessel, resulting to a heart attack.

Another condition that precipitates heart diseases is the oxidation of cholesterol. When cholesterol is oxidized, your body will react by sending more and more cholesterol to the distressed area in an effort to repair the damage. However, this can encourage the formation of plaque deposits. As plaque deposits increase, the blood vessel is narrowed and becomes stiffer. This will most likely impede blood flow to and from the heart and this can trigger a heart attack. Drugs that claim to reduce cholesterol amounts in the body can indeed lower cholesterol present in your bloodstream but these cannot guarantee protection from oxidation.

Atherosclerosis and heart diseases have no preferences as to which age group to attack. It can happen to anyone and may start early in life. Knowing even just a couple of causes of heart disease is important so you can do steps to avoid them. Learn more about the causes of heart disease and join the fight in battling this medical malady.

By Jason McDrarren

Sleep disorders are more common today than every before. Many people don't even realize they have a sleep disorder. If you have trouble falling asleep at night or if you wake up numerous times throughout the night, then you might have a sleep disorder. Do your family members comment on how exhausted you look? Or perhaps you get irritated more easily than you should and find that you easily become emotional? All of these factors could indicate that you suffer from a sleep disorder.

The quickest way to get to the bottom of your sleep disorder is to answer one simple question: What is your problem with sleep? Do you have trouble falling asleep? Do you have a hard time getting up in the morning? Maybe you simply can't make through a day without falling asleep. Or you might not sleep because your partner's sleeping keeps you up at night. Some people even discover that they strange things in their sleep that keeps them from becoming well-rested. How you answer this question will certainly help to narrow down the possible sleep disorders you might be experiencing.

For those that can't fall asleep, there are many possible reasons. Is it that you can't fall asleep when you lay down to go to bed, or do you wake up in the middle of the night and then have trouble sleeping? If it's trouble falling to sleep initially, then your symptom is named sleep latency. Sleep latency is indicative of several potential sleep disorders. You could suffer from one of several types of insomnia or delayed sleep phase disorder. You could also be experiencing restless leg syndrome. For those that find themselves waking up but then unable to sleep, the symptom is referred to as sleep fragmentation. Sleep fragmentation might be the result of sleep maintenance insomnia, advanced sleep phase disorder, or sleep maintenance insomnia. Each of these sleep disorders could be exacerbated by working swing shifts or by maintaining irregular hours of sleep.

If your symptoms involve constant tiredness throughout the day and you have trouble staying awake then you are probably suffering from a different sort of sleep disorder. You could have narcolepsy, especially if you seem to fall asleep uncontrollably and quickly, throughout the day.

Those with excessive sleep inertia find waking up in the morning very difficult. This could be the result of sleep apnea or delayed sleep phase disorder.

Other people find they do strange things when they are sleeping. This could range from sleep walking. They might wake up in new places or even make a meal while completely asleep. If this describes you then you may suffer from sleep walking, night terrors, or any number of parasomnias.

If it is your partner that keeps you up, then they might be suffering from sleep apnea or snoring. It could also be restless leg syndrome that makes it difficult for you to sleep.

By identifying the type of sleep problem a person suffers from, it becomes easier to identify one of the many sleep disorders that could be responsible. This makes treatment possible.
