Four Well Known Causes Of Water Damage

By Steve Estes

Homeowners should always stay on top of their home maintenance care to ensure that they will not be caught off guard by many kinds of damages. A way to do this is to ensure that they do some pre-emptive home repairs measures aimed to stop damages before they fully instigate. For homeowners, the most distressing but frequent causing damage to the home is water.

Water leaks can cause very extensive damage if left alone or it goes unnoticed in a home. Damage such as rot and mold. This type of damage is unlike many other home damages because it can crop up deep within the homes foundation.

A home washer is often connected to a cold and hot water line. It must be periodically checked to ensure that the lines are running, as they should. Start by moving the washer out from the wall and inspect the hoses and water line ends. Take a look at the joints and fix the leaks you find. This can be done with either duct tape or special glue. If its more difficult than you can handle, be sure to call a professional to take care of the problem.

Its very important to clean and/or replace the filters every three months so that they do not become blocked. Not doing so can lead to the machines malfunction and a large water increase on your bill because of the slow water flow. Be sure to increase these inspections on the filter more often if your area has hard water. While the washer is not running, check the shut off valve for leaks. If youve got one, replace the valve.

When you are checking out the washer machine, be sure to start with the hoses, as they often are the first to cause problems and leak, such as seen with many appliances. Make sure you have four inches of space between the back half of the washer and the water connection. The space you allow will keep the hose from bunching together and bursting in time. If your hoses look old or frayed, replace them. If you want to save money in the long run, use steel braided hoses. If not, youll need to change your hoses at least twice a year.

The ventilation hose that your dryer is connected to needs to be replaced every two years. Be sure to check it thoroughly and often to ensure that there are no holes/tears. Remember that this ventilation hose but connect to the outside world. For this reason, animals/insects can chew on it, causing you problems down the road. Ensure that the vent pipe isnt clogged by looking for lint behind and under the dryer. Clean out the lint trap after each dryer load so that the appliance does not overheat, which can cause the hoses stress.

The homes utility sink is another place water can build up so be sure you look for leaks under and behind it. If you find water puddles or water discoloration, theres a leak. If you see boards that have sunk in, theres been a problem in the past. Other possible signs is drips in the sink trap and slow draining pipes. Be sure to call in a professional immediately.

A good way to get rid of clogs is to use household cleaners such as Drain-O. However, should these fail, you should never try to fix it yourself. Dripping faucets and cracked/loose sink seals should be replaced immediately. If you notice damp and/or stained walls around plumbing pipes, this is a strong indication of an internal leak. You should fix this immediately before further damage.
