Acid Reflux - A Surprising Cause of Sore Throat

By Bob Cox

Although many people don't know it, acid reflux sore throat is very real. When you consider what reflux is, it shouldn't be that surprising. It really is just a matter of how severe the reflux is.

Reflux means backing up, and acid reflux is acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus. Because the esophagus doesn't have a protective lining the acid damages it.

Most commonly, the damage happens at the very end of the esophagus just before the stomach. The most common symptom associated with this is the burning pain of heartburn.

But there's no real reason the damage has to be confined to the end of the esophagus. If the reflux is bad enough it can reflux further up the esophagus until it reaches even the back of the throat.

This is what acid reflux sore throat is all about. It's irritation in the back of the throat as result of acid from the stomach backing all the way up the esophagus. The acid can even leak into the windpipe causing lung and breathing problems.

Because gravity works to keep the data content in the stomach when your standing but not so much when you're lying down, acid reflux sore throat tends to be worse at night when people are in bed.

Aside from the soreness, people with this problem may notice a metallic taste caused by the acid.

Acid reflux sore throat indicate to rather severe degree of reflux. Because of the damage acid can cause it's important not to ignore the symptom. Anyone with this problem should get it checked out and have the underlying cause treated.

Although we often tend to think of heartburn and acid reflux as minor problems, they really do have the potential to cause serious complications. Fortunately these are preventable if we get the information we need and take proper steps for treatment. Here are some links to some good resources to help you do that.
